Special Programs

Ninth Grade Program : students learn to think for themselves in science, history, the arts, and English and to see that success in each discipline requires mastering a common set of skills. Teachers help prepare students, one skill at a time, to design and complete a six week mastery project in May on a topic of their choice. The NGP is all about students both learning how to walk on their own intellectual legs and then better knowing where they want to go.Winterim: for two weeks in March, the entire Lawrence Academy community shifts its attention from the regular academic routine to intensive courses of study that are dedicated to experiential learning. In small groups of eight to sixteen, students and teachers plunge together into the world outside the classroom. Each year, about half the school's population leaves the campus to explore the people, art or environs of an American or international location, while others choose to remain on campus to devote themselves to community service or a specific skill or project in the Greater Boston area. On the final dayof Winterim, groups reunite to display their handiwork and recount their adventures with teachers, friends and parents in an atmosphere that engenders pride and celebrates personal achievement.Independent Immersion Program: a one or two year independent study program that encourages students with a strong interest in a specific academic area to pursue their passion under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Now at Stanford and Johns Hopkins, an 8 week program of independent Scholarship while enrolled in no more than two independent undergraduate courses offered at Stanford University for college credit. For 5 weeks in a similar program at Johns Hopkins University.
